“NAU” is an art collective that inherits the spirit of Japan’s “Gutai Art” and now shines globally as a non-sectarian group.

The “NAU 21st Century Art Joint Exhibition” is based on the “Neo-Dada Organizers.” The Neo-Dada Organizers were formed in the 1960s by Shusaku Arakawa, Ushio Shinohara, Genpei Akasegawa, Takumi Kazakura, and others, and later reorganized by anti-art leader Masunobu Yoshimura and top performance artist Tadaki Iwanaga as the predecessor “Artist Union (AU Artist Union).” In 2000, NAU launched the “NAU 21st Century Art Exhibition – First Edition” and has continued as a non-sectarian artists’ union to this day.

Key Members:

  • Shusaku Arakawa: Recipient of the Japanese Purple Ribbon Medal, holder of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
  • Ushio Shinohara: Japanese avant-garde artist; works held in the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art (Canada), Lyon Contemporary Art Museum (France), Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, among others.
  • Genpei Akasegawa: Member of the avant-garde groups “Neo-Dada” and “High Akachuu”; recipient of the 84th Akutagawa Ryunosuke Prize.
  • Takumi Kazakura: Organizer of Neo-Dadaism; invited to the Pompidou Center in Paris for “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910–1970.”
  • Masunobu Yoshimura: Born in Oita City; co-founded the New Century Group with architect Arata Isozaki in 1951 and studied at Musashino Art University. Exhibited at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition from 1955 without censorship. Formed the Neo-Dada Organizers with Ushio Shinohara in 1965, gaining attention for his “anti-art” works. Lived in New York for solo and group exhibitions, returned to Japan in 1961, pursued dynamic and light art, presented “Anti-Matter: Light on a Möbius” at the Japan Contemporary Art Exhibition, contributed to various pavilions at Expo ’70 Osaka, later produced pop art works such as Pig・Pig・lib; and explored diverse creative expressions in 2D and 3D.
